First Holiday Region Zillertal
Located only 40 kilometres to the east of Tyrol's capital city of Innsbruck is the "First Holiday Region Zillertal", which includes the 12 villages of the Zillertal valley. The Zillertal is known to have maintained important age-old traditions and, at the same time, is known to be one of the most active regions of Tyrol and the birthplace of alpine mountaineering. The local farmers play an important role in the Zillertal valley and farm the sun-flooded valley consciously and environmentally-friendly. Due to these farming attitudes, the high-quality cheese from this region is widely known.
During winter, this region is a true paradise for all ski and snowboard enthusiasts with many renowned ski resorts such as Kaltenbach, Fügen, and Hochfügen, which boasts many 4-star hotels and even a 3-toque-awarded restaurant. This region offers even more activities during summer: hiking, mountaineering tours, mountain biking, climbing, grass-skiing, rafting, and swimming in the Ziller river or in one of the many beautiful lakes. Most villages can be reached by using the convenient Zillertalbahn train, which sometimes even uses a nostalgic steam locomotive. Explore the beautiful natural features of the Zillertal valley, such as the Kaltenbach waterfall, or the Hart Schleierwasserfall waterfall, which is 91 metres high and an absolutely phenomenal sight. Enjoy fabulous mountain tours in the Tux Alps at a higher elevation, which can easily be accessed by using the Hochfügen or Spieljochbahn lifts. A very special highlight is the Zillertal high-alpine road, with stunning views high above the valley all the way to 2.100 metres above sea-level.
